Vincent van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter whose profound influence on 20th-century art is undeniable, despite his tragically brief and tumultuous life. Born in the southern Netherlands, Van Gogh's artistic journey began relatively late, after unsuccessful stints as an art dealer and a missionary. His oeuvre, though produced over a period of just over a decade, consists of approximately 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings. Throughout his career, Van Gogh sought to capture the emotional and spiritual essence of his subjects, often through bold, vibrant colors and expressive brushwork that came to define his signature style. Initially influenced by the darker tones of the realists and later by the Impressionists' use of light and color, he eventually developed a highly personal and innovative visual language. This evolved into the distinctive swirling patterns and vivid palette that are hallmarks of his mature work. His time in Paris exposed him to the contemporary avant-garde movements, which led to a dramatic shift in his painting techniques. Despite living most of his life in poverty and struggling with mental health issues, Van Gogh produced an extraordinary body of work that included landscapes, portraits, and self-portraits.
