Hubert Robert
France 1733-1808
Hubert Robert (1733-1808) was a prominent French painter and landscape architect, known for his romantic depictions of classical ruins and idyllic garden scenes. Born in Paris on May 24, 1733, Robert began his artistic journey under the tutelage of several esteemed masters, including Jean-Baptiste Pierre and Joseph-Marie Vien. He later honed his skills while studying in Italy from 1754 to 1765, where he developed a profound fascination with Roman antiquities, which would become a hallmark of his work.
Robert's oeuvre is characterized by its imaginative and picturesque representations of ancient structures set amidst lush, overgrown landscapes or juxtaposed against contemporary settings. His "capricci," as these fantasy compositions were often called, evoke a sense of nostalgia and contemplation about the passage of time and the cycle of decay and rebirth. Among his most celebrated works are series depicting idealized gardens and architectural fantasies that blend reality with imagination, earning him the epithet "Robert des Ruines."
In addition to his painting career, Robert also made significant contributions to the field of landscape architecture. Appointed as "Keeper of the King's Pictures" during the reign of Louis XVI, he played a pivotal role in designing and redesigning various parks and gardens across France, reflecting his aesthetic vision both on canvas and in physical space.
Throughout his lifetime, Robert exhibited at the prestigious Salon de Paris and received commissions from the aristocracy and the Church. Despite the upheaval of the French Revolution, which temporarily interrupted his professional life, Robert continued to paint and teach until his death on April 15, 1808. Today, Hubert Robert is remembered as an influential figure who bridged the gap between the Rococo and Neoclassical periods, leaving behind a legacy of art that continues to inspire awe and reflection on the enduring beauty of ruins and the natural world.
