Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, widely known as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), was a French painter, printmaker, draftsman, and illustrator whose vivid depictions of Parisian nightlife during the Belle Époque era left an indelible mark on modern art. Born into an aristocratic family in Albi, France, his passion for art developed despite being physically challenged by a congenital condition that stunted his growth. Toulouse-Lautrec's work is characterized by its distinctive portrayal of the colorful world of cabarets, theaters, dance halls, and brothels, particularly those centered around the Moulin Rouge and Montmartre district. His artistic prowess lay not only in capturing the essence of these lively scenes but also in revealing the humanity and psychological depth of his subjects, often society's marginalized individuals such as dancers, singers, and prostitutes. His innovative techniques in lithography and poster design revolutionized graphic arts, elevating advertising to the status of fine art.
